A police inspection in the city of Ouistreham, in the north French departement of Calvados, has escalated into a confrontation between the migrants and the gendermes. The officers wanted to ID a group of around twenty migrants who attacked them, leaving them no alternative but to use tear gas and rubber bullets to keep them at bay. The France Bleu news site was the first to report on the incident.

The migrants were trying to scale and get inside a lorry when the gendermes appeared. In the altercation that ensued two gendermes were injuried and two vehicles have been damaged.

Authorities have detained one of the migrants. Based on the account of a local volunteer assisting the refugees, one of the migrants has also sustained injuries, although the gendermerie has refused to corroborate this information to the press.

Ouistreham is a popular starting point for migrants intending to reach England. They make regular attempts to climb inside lorries headed towards the ferries, so authorities are closely monitoring the port and carrying out regular inspections. Migrants, however, often attempt to clamber aboard moving lorries, despite the presence of gendarmes.
