Western Europe uses Eastern Europe as a junkyard

The advanced West is working to protect the environment by exporting the problem to the East. There are significantly more cars in use in the western member states of the European Union than in its eastern countries. Data from a survey highlight that Western countries use Eastern states as a kind of auto scrapyard.

Figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) show that there were 550 cars per one thousand inhabitants in the European Union in 2020. France (565) and Germany (579) have far more vehicles per one thousand than the EU average, and the ratio is also significantly higher in Belgium (493) and Denmark (467) compared with the EU’s eastern states.

In the eastern member states of the European Union, there are far fewer passenger cars cars per one thousand people. This figure is 428 for Croatia and 404 for Hungary if calculated per one thousand inhabitants. The situation is similar in Slovakia, with 447 vehicles per one thousand. Romania has the lowest car density, with 377 vehicles per one thousand inhabitants.

The ACEA report also shows the magnitude of growth in vehicle fleet in each country. Romania stands out in this indicator, as well, as the number of cars on the road increased by 5.4 per cent between 2019 and 2020. This is partly due to the fact that Western countries are doing their bit for the environment by selling their old, worn-out cars to Eastern countries, thus using Eastern European countries as a dumping grounds. This is the reason why the average age of cars in Eastern Europe is much higher than in Western Europe, as shown in the table below. And later these cars will have to be withdrawn from circulation in Eastern Europe and disposed of there.

In Eastern Europe, a significant proportion of cars bought in from abroad are very old. When a second-hand car is bought from a Western dealership, the vehicles are on average 13 to 14 years old, but the cars sold from Germany, France, or the Netherlands, are often 18 to 20 years old.

In recent years, shocking footage of so-called „horror caravans” has spread like wildfire on the internet. Romanian used car dealers break almost every existing rule and tow 6-7 vehicles with one car from Germany or the Netherlands all the way to their home country, Romania.

These horror caravans have already caused several fatal accidents on the roads of Eastern Europe.
