Influencer betrays LGBT peers

A transgender influencer, who also belongs to the LGBT community, began identifying gay man by their names in a recent social media video. Turning against members of the community is not only unethical but also dangerous, because homosexuality is punishable with imprisonment and gay men are also at risk of physical abuse in his country.

Sofia Talouni is a transgender influencer, who has recently become rather famous, albeit for the wrong reasons. In April, she live-streamed a video on her social media account and began naming gay men living in Morocco.

Thus the trans woman lashed out at her own peers in the LGBT community she also belongs to, just like homosexuals. However, the fact that same sex relations are despised in Morocco and can be punished with imprisonment is a much bigger problem. Those who are exposed as being gay are likely to be ostracised or physically attacked at any time.

Knowing all this, Talouni has decided to begin outing gay men anyway. As a Moroccan expatriate, she was fully aware of the potential consequences of her actions. However, she now lives in Turkey, where she thought her video would not put her in harm s way.

In the video, Sofia encouraged her followers to create fake profiles on place ads on gay dating apps to identify and out gay men living in their communities. As the app shows the exact location of its users, it could reveal that someone s husband or son is gay, Sofia said, essentially inciting people to rat on their family members.

Although Sofia s account was removed soon after she posted the video, she has caused considerable damage. Her followers have outed 50-100 gay men in countries where strict rules apply, with acquaintances of „exposed” homosexuals confirming that their friends have mysteriously disappeared or committed suicide after their sexual orientation was disclosed.

In the wake of Sofia s video, images of the outed gay men began to surface online, and they have received several threatening messages from users. PinkNews saved a screenshot of one such conversation, where someone first tells an exposed homosexual that he would cut his throat, and then blame him for novel coronavirus.

A young Moroccan man told the PinkNews site that he has been in constant fear since Talouni s video, because he is gay and he has already come across the pictures of some of his exposed friends online. He said he once left a comment on a gay man s post, but his parents noticed it and beat him up for it, so he s had no courage to tell his family about his own homosexuality.

Apparently, Sofia s video on outing gay many has set off a huge avalanche on social media, and no one knows why the influencer has felt the need to turn on her own peers so hard.
