PM Orban: Creating new Christian Democratic right will be Europe s decisive political process

Together with Matteo Salvini and Mateusz Morawiecki, we want to establish a new political force in the protection of traditional, national values, PM Viktor Orban told Hungary s public radio. Mr Orban also touched on the government s measures to counter the coronavirus pandemic and Hungary s vaccination drive.

Viktor Orban met Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and former Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini, the head of the right-wing Lega party, in Budapest on Thursday.

We talked about the future of Europe, Hungary s prime minister said in his Friday morning radio interview. He added that former traditional Christian Democratic parties have committed themselves to cooperating with the left and abandoned their values. Cooperation between the right and the left also implied the adoption of left-wing programmes, the premier said.

Millions of us feel that those who still follow the former, traditional values, also need to be represented, Mr Orban stressed, adding that – together with Matteo Salvini and Mateusz Morawiecki – they want to create a new political force to defend traditional, nation-based values so that their voice is heard, and they are represented in European politics.

This alliance is intended to represent those who think in terms of values such as nation, family, Christianity, or human dignity. Although there are differences of opinion on some minor issues, we are able to resolve them when it comes to issues of greater significance, he added.

Building this nation-based alliance will be a decisive process in Europe over the next six months, he said.

Hungary is one phase ahead

There is no basis for Western superiority, and once this situation is over, it will become clear that 70 per cent of the people have been inoculated with Eastern vaccines. We need not break ties with the West, but we have to adapt to the new situation, Hungary s prime minister said.

We must be understanding when receiving criticism, Viktor Orban said. Some think that the virus can be stopped with closures. It may have been true for the first and second waves, but the spread of the mutant British variant cannot be slowed down with that. It can only be eradicated by using vaccines.

Certain countries turned vaccine procurement into a political issue, but we did not, he pointed out.

The number of those who have received the first dose will reach 2.5 million 1 or 2 days after Easter, Mr Orban said, adding that one week later, more than 3 million people will have been administered the first jab, enabling us to return to our former life.

It would be important to adhere to the restrictions during the Easter holiday, Mr Orban said arguing that it would take another 2-3 weeks for the pandemic curve to turn into decline and for the vaccines to exert their effect in decelerating the pandemic.

Viktor Orban called the anti-vaccination campaign a crime, pointing out that those who are dissuaded from taking the jab may die. If someone does not want to be inoculated, it is their decision, but they must not try to talk others out of it, he stressed.

Even though the Hungarian left is waging a fierce campaign against vaccinations in the hope of political gain, many left-wing politicians have already received the jab, with some taking the Eastern vaccines that they had so vehemently attacked, Mr Orban said. He also recalled that the left has traditionally relied on external forces – first Moscow, now Brussels. In contrast, national policymaking means that the Hungarian world is arranged by Hungarians, and they decide about the things that affect their own lives.

Viktor Orban: There will be a Hungarian resurrection, we are on our way to freedom

People were following the efforts of doctors and nurses with great appreciation, Viktor Orban said. They are our heroes, he added. We are celebrating Easter, but oftentimes our thoughts are with medical workers. The government will also continue to work each day, because it s this type of Easter, PM Orban said. Let s not spread anti-vaccination views or talk of the collapse of Hungary s healthcare, he added. There will be a Hungarian resurrection, we are on our way to freedom, PM Orban noted in conclusion.
