Paris was the site of a shocking demonstration, with thousands of Algerians taking to the streets to celebrate their country’s independence and praise the Algerian army for „resisting the incessant attacks of traitors,” especially the country’s former colonialiser, France. The crowd in the Place du Colonel-Fabien chanted that the army was the brother of the people and that „the children of France sided with the traitors”.

The demonstrators also complained that the interior minister did not give them permission to demonstrate in the Place de la Republique, as Gerald Darmanin had reserved the square for members of the Algerian political organisation known as the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabila (MAK), which is considered a terrorist movement in Algeria, and the Islamist movement Rachad. France’s refusal to extradite the members of these two movements is proof that Emmanuel Macron and the France he leads are supporting these terrorists, the protesters say.

However, this was met with reservations by Damien Rieu, a right-wing politician and member of the Eric Zemmour-founded and -led Reconquete party, who said that it was not consistent for these people to celebrate Algeria’s independence in a country where they had gone of their own free will to live with their former colonisers.

Besides criticising France, the country that welcomed them, the Algerian demonstrators also chanted serious racist slogans.

There had been no reaction to the racist remarks, either from Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, or from the LICRA anti-racist league, Mr Rieu complained. LICRA’s inaction is particularly surprising, as it is holding its Week of Education and Action against Racism, Anti-Semitism and Discrimination right now.
