Brussels responds with conspiracy of silence

The Brussels bureaucracy quietly acknowledged that the Hungarian opposition runs an anti-Semitic, racist candidate in an interim election. V4NA has asked several politicians whether they find it morally acceptable for someone known for his anti-Semitic statements to have a place on the European political scene. The EP groups of the Hungarian governing parties also drew attention to the matter, they wrote a letter to the groups of liberals and socialists but have not received any answer, V4NA found out.

In Hungary, a by-election will take place in one of the constituencies on 11 October. One of the candidates is Laszlo Biro, who made the headlines for his far-right statements and made harsh anti-Semitic remarks on social media earlier.

V4NA has contacted a number of leading European politicians, including David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the European Commission, Iratxe Garcia Perez, president of the European socialists (S&D) and Dacian Ciolos, leader of European liberals (Renew Europe).

We wanted to know whether they find it morally acceptable for politicians known for their anti-Semitic and racist statements, to be in any position in the European Union in 2020.

However, leading Brussels politicians remain silent, it seems like the Brussels bureaucracy has acknowledged that Hungarian opposition runs an anti-Semitic, racist candidate.

European Parliament group of the Hungarian governing party Fidesz has also drawn the attention of European socialists (S&D) and liberals (Renew) to the case, as Hungarian opposition parties belonging to these EP groups are also supporting the running of the anti-Semitic candidate.

MEPs Tamas Deutsch and Jozsef Szajer have stated in their letter they believed that supporting such an openly racist and xenophobic candidate legitimated hate speech and endorsed racism and anti-Semitism in public speech.

If a civic, nationalist, Christian democratic, conservative party in Central and Eastern Europe was to consider to run such a candidate, MEPs of S&D and Renew would be the loudest to protest, feeling the European values being jeopardised, Mr Deutsch and Mr Szajer added. The MEPs want to know why are they silent now? They believe that S&D and Renew group member parties supporting Mr Biro means a threat to all Jewish and Roma citizens in Europe.

Neither the liberals, nor the socialists have answered the questions of the MEPs, V4NA found out.
