The city of Gothenburg, Sweden, back in 2020, earmarked a sizable sum of money to support an opera written for primary school children which portrays transgenderism in a positive light.

In the spring of 2020, the Gothenburg municipality provided support in the amount of 4.5 million Swedish crowns (approximately 435 thousand euro) for 49 cultural projects. One of these was the opera performance „I Don’t Know Who I Am and I Love It”, which was awarded 100,000 crowns (nearly 10,000 euros). The show was also supported by the Vastra Gotaland region and its cultural council.

The play premiered on 29 December at the Masthuggsterassen Cinnober Theater in Gothenburg.

The 35-minute show for children addressed the issue of transgenderism, conveying norm-based messages to primary school children, rather than facts based on scientific evidence.

“The opera ‘I Don’t Know Who I Am and I Love It’ is about how tired you can get of being seen as something other than what you feel in your soul,” the organiser’s statement reads.

The opera has been criticised by many, including author Susanna Birgersson, who says the show is nothing more than the indoctrination of children, sensitising them to trans ideology.

The City of Gothenburg’s Department of Culture declined to comment on the issue or the critics’ views.
