Do authors know their anti-racist storybook is actually racist?

A new storybook portrays whites as the epitome of all manner of evil, while presenting BLM's supporters as good guys. The authors of a recently published book set out to explain the concepts of racism, blackface and Islamophobia to children.

The children’s book for age seven and up entitled „La Violence” (Violence) revolves around this particular topic, albeit with a decidedly anti-white approach. Among other issues, the book seeks to answer the question of whether men have always been violent and also explains to children what the law states about whether they have the right to strike back if someone hits them.

However, the biggest problem with the publication, according to French essayist Caroline Valentin, is that it systematically argues that whites are the source of all evil and that people of colour are all good, victims, and supporters of the BLM movement. In her tweet, the essayist poses the rhetorical question:

Are the authors aware that their publication is actually racist?

Caroline Valentin has contacted the publishing company Editions Milan and asked them about the content. She was told that children should be taught what life is all about, especially with regard to racial hatred.

The book’s illustrations all suggest that whites are bad and criminals. For example, in one picture a black teacher tries to pacify two white pupils having a brawl, while in another one, a white man in handcuffs is brought before a coloured judge.

This, of course, is not the only French children’s book dealing with the topic of racism. There is another book which is essentially an anti-racist handbook for children, based on its title. It deals with racism, blackface and Islamophobia, among other things.

Author Rachid Sguini, using the pen name Rakidd, was a victim of racism as a child, and he says he still is. With his book, he aims to explain to people unfamiliar with the subject what racism really is, and how it manifests itself on a daily basis.

The book takes a funny approach to the subject, using comics, drawings, diagrams and examples to explain the meaning of racism, blackface, Islamophobia, Afro-feminism, and discrimination, with a special focus on black racism and Asian racism.

In each chapter, the author is assisted by experts on the subject, including French feminist, filmmaker, researcher and actress Amandine Gay, who made her first documentary on the role of black women in France, as well as American New Left philosopher, civil rights activist and ardent BLM supporter Angela Davis.
