Italian ambassador killed in DR Congo attack
A UN convoy has come under attack in Goma, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Italian ambassador travelling with the convoy was killed in the assault.
A convoy of the UN mission was attacked in Goma, in the eastern part of the DRC.
According to diplomatic sources, Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio and a police officer travelling with him were killed in the attack. Mr Attanasio was shot during the action, and he died from his injuries later.

The head of the EU delegation to Kinshasha was also travelling with the convoy. A Virunga National Park spokesman said the attack was a kidnapping attempt. It was carried out near the town of Kanyamahoro at around 10:15 pm on Monday.
Several armed groups operate in the Virunga area in the eastern part of the country, along the border section between the DRC, Rwanda and Uganda.
