PM Orban: Vaccination capacity exceeds vaccine quantities coming from EU

The problem is not our lack of vaccination capacity, but that we do not have enough vaccines, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with Hungary s public radio on Friday.

More than 100,000 people have already been vaccinated in Hungary, Viktor Orban said, ading that Hungary s vaccination capacity exceeds vaccine quantities.

Figures show while 4 per cent of the population has already been vaccinated in Britain, mass inoculation in the EU has only reached around one per cent, Mr Orban said.

The premier raised the question whether the joint vaccine procurement was a good idea. He recalled that the countries who had purched their own vaccines, such as Israel, were way ahead. He stressed that the Hungarian government s delegates are still in Beijing, conducting talks on vaccine procurement. Regarding the Chinese vaccine, PM Orban stressed that the only thing it needs is to be approved and classed as safe by Hungary s health authorities, which may happen in a few days. Experts at the Operative Board meeting have confirmed that the vaccine posed no greater risk than the virus itself.

People s willingness to have themselves vaccinated is constantly increasing. PM Orban said. The vaccination of health workers and residents of elderly care homes will soon be completed, allowing those aged over 60 – and suffering from chronic illnesses – to also receive the jab soon.

As Hungarian health authorities register over one hundred coronavirus-related fatalities per day, I do not need a Greek commissioner telling me what to do regarding vaccine procurement, PM Orban said.

Regarding Hungary s healthcare system, Mr Orban said it was in a much better shape than that of many Western European countries, thanks to the country s well-trained and hard-working health professionals.

Hungary s premier also stressed that if Hungary was to rely on the pace of procurement dictated by Brussels, the government could lift the current restrictions in late summer, or early fall.

Viktor Orban also touched on recent steps taken by the Hungarian opposition to suggest that the government is not handling the pandemic properly. I feel that nothing is sacred to Hungary s left-wing parties anymore, Mr Orban said, adding that the left went too far in 2020. It is not reasonable logic trying to prove that what is bad for the country is good for the left, especially in times of crisis, Orban said, alluding to the left s various fake news and bogus videos.

Regarding the economy, the premier stressed that Hungarians want to work and, without this willingness, the economic results would not be good. Hungarian entrepreneurs are becoming increasingly competitive, Mr Orban said, adding that although he keeps an eye on the Western countries crisis management, Hungary s method is different. Hungary focuses on protecting jobs, and has introduced huge tax cuts.

Viktor Orban said the government would gradually reintroduce the 13th month pensions and support people s home renovation projects, adding that young people aged under 25 would be granted full income tax exemption from January 1, 2022 at the latest. We are still working on this thugh, he added.

„If this succeeds, the whole crisis management system will be complete,” Viktor Orban said.

Back in 2010, Viktor Orban promised to create one million new jobs and now there are 850,000 more workplaces. He now pledged to create more jobs than have been destoyed by the pandemic.
