Radical left-wing activist named Guardian of the Year
The activist, selected to be one of TIME magazine s Guardians of the Year, has mobilised thousands of people amidst the coronavirus pandemic to protest against police violence and racism, while ignoring public health measures.
Assa Traore, also referred to as the French George Floyd, sister of Adama Traore, who died in 2016, was named one of TIME s 2020 Guardians of the Year. As an advocate for the Traore Committee she was recognised for her fight against racial inequalities. The paper devoted a separate chapter to the radical left-wing activist, highlighting the young woman s open attack on police violence and racism that are, allegedly, prevalent in France.

Since the death of her younger brother, Adama, in 2016, Assa Traore has devoted her life to taking action against police violence and racism. In the summer, for example, despite a ban imposed in line with public health measures, she organised an illegal sympathy demonstration that was attended by a crowd of 20,000 people in the cetre of Paris. Eventually, the peaceful commemoration has escalated into a street riot with protestres wreaking havoc and causing material damage worth millions of euros.

Members of the Traore family make regular „appearances” in the media, as many are thieves boasting an extensive criminal background, who do not shy away from violence against police or the possession of drugs.

Assa Traore herself regularly speaks out against the police. Six months ago, she provoked a protest with a giant graffiti with the writing „Against police violence and racism”, which she unveiled with Mayor Azzedine Taibi in the city of Stains, Seine-Saint-Denis departement.

That said, Assa Traore s systematic activity to undermine the French state does not cease here. The left-wing activist also targeted young people during her lectures in public schools, openly promoting her anti-police agenda.

The most shocking aspect of the story is, however, Assa Traore telling Time magazine that „France refuses to be held accountable for its colonial past, or for the slavery in its history, and that s something we have to face every day.”
These are incredible words from a woman whose grandfather is also suspected of having owned some slaves. In an interview with jeuneafrique.com magazine in October 2016, Assa said her grandfather had been the governor of Kayes, an area where certain communities own slaves to this day. One such community is the Soninke ethnic group, to which the Traore family belongs.

It appears that TIME magazine has awarded its Guardian of the Year title to someone who incites hatred against the officers of the country which welcomed her family, completely disregards rules and regulations and organises unlawful demonstrations.
TIME also announced its choice for Person of the Year, with President-elect Joe Biden and his vice presidential running mate, 56-year-old Kamala Harris receiving the recognition this year. Editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal wrote that the two were chosen „for changing the American story, for showing that the forces of empathy are greater than the furies of division, for sharing a vision of healing in a grieving world.”
