Risking people's lives 'worth it,' says climate activist

A radical climate activist believes that their cause is so important and magnificent that it is even worth risking human lives for.

Radical climate activist Christian Blaulcame has come to the defence of a group called Letzte Generation (Last Generation), whose members regularly create chaos and block traffic by gluing themselves to roads. Beyond putting their lives at danger, they also risk the lives of others with their protests, as preventing emergency services – fire, ambulance or police – vehicles from responding to an alert in time may have fatal consequences. However, this risk is trivial, Christian Blaul argues, compared to the threat faced by planet Earth.

„One thing I always prepare for mentally, at least in my subconscious, is that someone will die because of a traffic jam. But we must run this risk,”

the climate activist said in film director Benedict Bartsch’s documentary. He went on asking:

„The question is: what is better? Not to protest and accept the fossil deal, or to try something that can transform society and slow down the climate disaster?”

Christian Blaul is one of the best-known climate activist from the Letzte Generation group. Last August, he gained notoriety for a protest that caused a traffic jam in Stockholm, Sweden. After the demonstration, local authorities threw him in jail for 16 days, and he was also taken to court on multiple occasions.

Jorg Kubiessa, the police chief of Saxony, was also interviewed in the documentary. He said he did not understand why the activists took the risk of someone dying because of a climate protest.

„I do not support this at all and given that they risk other people’s lives by causing traffic jams, it is illegal.”

he said, adding that the views of climate activists did not fit into his interpretation of the law. Unfortunately, there have already been examples in Germany where the actions of climate protesters have played a role in the failure to save a victim’s life.

In Autumn, a cyclist was declared brain dead following a collision with a concrete mixer in Berlin. Her injuries could have been mitigated, had emergency response vehicles not been hampered by climate change activists blocking the road. A spokesperson for the Berlin fire brigade confirmed that emergency response vehicles had been delayed due to protests by climate change activists, who were blocking the A100 autobahn.

After authorities announced that the woman involved in the accident was brain dead, the Last Generation issued a statement deflecting responsibility and accusing of hate speech those who said they were responsible for the ambulance not arriving on time. They also said they would continue their actions.

In recent months, the protests of climate activists have become increasingly extreme across Europe. As also reported by V4NA, protesters have blocked roads, obstructed traffic, vandalised buildings and even damaged works of art in protest against fossil fuels.
