The Atlantic claims that President Donald Trump has made disrespectful remarks about fallen soliers. However, a growing number of people close to the president have refuted the American magazine s allegations.

Citing anonymous sources, The Atlantic reported that Donald Trump had cancelled a planned 2018 trip to a cemetery in France for American troops killed in combat. Allegedly, he declined the visit out of concern about how the rainy weather would affect his hair, and because he thought honouring America s slain soldiers was not that important.

„Why should I go to that cemetery? It s filled with losers,” the US president asked, according to the magazine.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to respond to the allegation.

„The Atlantic Magazine is dying, like most magazines, so they make up a fake story in order to gain some relevance,” he tweeted.

The president also spoke to the New York Times about the allegations, insisting that he would be willing to swear on anything that he had never uttered such words regarding America s fallen heroes.

Since the scandal erupted, a growing number of people have come forward to corroborate that President Trump did not speak disrespectfully about US troops killed in combat.

Melanie Trump also came to the defence of her husband, posting this message on Twitter:

„The Atlantic story is not true. It has become a very dangerous time when anonymous sources are believed above all else, and no one knows their motivation. This is not journalism – it is activism. And it is a disservice to the people of our great nation,” she wrote.

Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders also defended the president.

„The Atlantic story on [Donald Trump] is total BS. I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion – this never happened. I have sat in the room when our President called family members after their sons were killed in action and it was heart-wrenching…”, she wrote.

White House Director of Social Media Dan Scalvino also said that the allegations were lies.

US media personality Mark Simone shared an earlier photo of the president showing him touching a veteran who had no arms.

Donald Trump has always spoken respectfully about veterans. Back in 2007, he wrote „Nobody talks about the soldiers that are coming back with no arms and no legs… The most beautiful people I ve ever seen.”

A day after The Atlantic released its article, nearly 700 veterans published an open letter assuring the president of their support.

„Anyone who knows President Trump has seen his love and reverence for our military and veterans. That is why we, veterans from every generation, are writing today to reaffirm our support for President Trump.”
