Gyurcsany and his "little home championship"

It's common knowledge who the leader of the left wing is, so nothing is now at stake at the primaries, the politician said.

More than one million Hungarians have signed the government’s „Stop Gyurcsany, Stop Karacsony!” petition so far, Istvan Hollik, the communications director of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party told public radio on Sunday. Regarding the ongoing Hungarian opposition primaries, Mr Hollik said Gyurcsany has, for a long time now, proved unable to win general elections, so he organised a „little home championship” of sorts, where the numbers suggest that he’s in „full control” of the left. The Fidesz politician also made mention of the fact that the opposition Momentum party came in last, which he said was proof that the left wing’s self-renewal attempt has failed.

It’s obvious for everyone that the left wing is commandeered by (former Hungarian PM) Gyurcsany, so nothings is at stake at the primaries, Mr Hollik said. The only question, he added, was whether it’s the wife of Ferenc Gyurcsany, or Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony to emerge as the left’s prime ministerial candidate.

Istvan Hollik also underlined that the LIBE delegation, currently investigating Hungary, is comprised of a former LGBTQ activist and several (specifically) liberal politicians, who have been constantly attacking Hungary. As to the committee’s rules of procedure, Mr Hollik said the delegation cannot have an MEP from the investigated country among its members, adding however, that Anna Donath, a leftist-liberal opposition politician in Hungary, was granted permission to be a delegation member. The LIBE committee should first comply with its own rules, before investigating any issue in any of the EU’s member states.
