Strangers set ablaze Christmas tree purposely
Many called it a childish and utterly useless act when strangers deliberately set fire to a Christmas tree displayed on the main city square in a “vulnerable” district.
The Christmas tree quickly caught fire in a district of Lyon, France, after strangers set it ablaze willfully, several news portals reported.

Each year City Hall displays a Christmas tree in the main square, much to the delight of local children, a tradition frowned on by some this year. The Valeurs Actuelles news site also emphasized that the tree was erected in a „vulnerable” district of Lyon.
Speaking of the incident, many – including the district s mayor – said that setting the tree ablaze was childish, malicious and completely useless, while others noted that this type of crime is quite common in the area. Some said the neighbourhood was heavily „Islamised, not assimilated”, according to Valeurs Actuelles.
Authorities are investigating whether the fire was due to arson or an electrical failure but, according to press reports, the latter is quite unlikely.

Commenting on the issue, someone on Twitter referred to an eralier decision by the mayor of Bordeaux, who refused to erect a Christmas tree on the city s main square this year, citing environmental reasons. “The methods are not the same, but the fight is similar,” he wrote.
