Will mayor of Budapest pay back money he earned illegally?

It recently came to light that Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony, who is running for the post of prime minister, taught at Corvinus University for ten years without having the required qualifications. According to information revealed on Thursday, the sitting mayor grossed a total of nearly 25 million forints (70 thousand euros) in the ten years between 2004 and 2014 employed at the university, as evidenced by the documents received by the News Centre of Mediaworks Hungary.

The left-wing politician often talks about the importance of rule of law and respecting and enforcing the rules. The question, therefore, arises as to whether he is considering paying back the millions he earned, seeing that the Education Authority’s investigation found that neither of Mr Karacsony’s appointments as assistant professor nor as senior lecturer complied with university regulations and the law.

Hircentrum asked the press department of the mayor’s office whether Mr Karacsony plans to give back the money he received illegally in order to eliminate irregularities and guarantee the enforcement of law. The mayor has not yet responded to the inquiry.
