Left-wing mayor knew about Action for Democracy's fundraising

When asked by a Hungarian news portal's reporter about the campaign funding of opposition parties from abroad, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony responded that only "civil sector organisations" were the recipients of the hefty amount.

Gergely Karacsony was aware of the fundraising by Action for Democracy, the Hungarian portal Mandiner reported based on a video put out by Mediaworks.

Budapest’s mayor admitted that he knew about the funding, but continued to insist that the more than three billion Hungarian forints (about 7.5 million euros) in donations went only to „civil sector organizations” and not to any opposition parties. However, he also claimed that he did not know the size of the amount.

As we have reported on several occasions, the Hungarian Left has received 3 billion forints in foreign funding for its election campaign through Action for Democracy. Some days ago a video revealed that according to the US-based organisation’s official fundraising platform, only eleven people had contributed the amount, not thousands of micro-donors as was claimed. It has also become clear that donors did not need to provide a passport number to pay in their pledges, and that the money was intended not for some kind of „culture change”, but for the elections.
